This week we spoke to Yoshimi Nakamichi, the designer from new footwear label Lulu Rouge.
Where were you working before you created your own label?
I originally came to Sydney to start the boutique 'Dorothy May' in Double Bay. The products we sold there were 'maximalist' style bags and accessories that I'd sourced from my travels throughout India. Following the success I had through my jewellery line, Nicola Finetti offered me a consignment in his boutique, which led to me starting Nicola Finetti Axessory.
What made you decide to get into fashion design?
I've always felt drawn towards the fashion world, as I love to surround myself with creative and inspiring people.

Where did the name of your label come from?
I chose the name as it seemed to summarise the quirky and chic feel I wanted the brand to have. It was also catchy and had a nice flow. Memorability is important in a name.
What is your brand philosophy?
We wanted to offer on trend and affordable signature style footwear with uncompromising detail for quality. Great quality and comfort shouldn’t be compromised in the creation of fashionable footwear. It’s amazing how the right pair of shoes can determine a woman’s mood, confidence and physique. Our shoes are designed for fashion savvy, sophisticated, active women who set trends, not follow them.

Tell us about your SS11 collection.
For our first major collection, we wanted to introduce the story of Lululand: the fantasy world around which the label is based. Lululand is a place of quirks and twists, novelties and curiosities where the offbeat reigns supreme and individuality is something to be celebrated. We really wanted to explore the timeless adage of 'opposites attract' though a harmony of hard and soft, structured and unstructured, masculine and feminine.
Who is the Lulu Rouge customer?
She is experimental with her style and looking for something a little quirky, a more little curious.
What’s next for your label?
We will be visiting Italy later this month to source options for production. Also, we hope to launch our men's footwear line 'Victim of Telephone' for SS2012!
