Activity: get your skates on in a winter wonderland

5 July, 2010

Sydney, you are so lucky. This winter there are so many fun activities on the go! Our current favourite: get your Tonya Harding on and bust out some figure skating moves at one of the many ice skating rinks popping up around Sydney!

What better way to welcome winter, than with some amazing open air ice skating? Last Thursday I experienced The Alpine Winter Festival’s ice skating fun at Cathedral Square, Cook and Phillip Park. Right in the city. I’m talking pumping 80’s tunes, a snow machine, hot chocolate, European foods and a whole lot of awkward city hipsters who have clearly never skated in their whole lives. It was like nothing i have ever done before and now I am addicted to ice (skating).

The city’s run of the Alpine Festival has just wrapped up, but the fun is moving on to bigger and better things - like a 600sqm open air ice rink at Bondi. Incredible. From the 16th to the 25th of July, the winter festival will take over Bondi with a massive outdoor rink, brilliant food, music and winter vibes.

For about $20 you will have the best fun ever, we promise. Once the initial fear of falling over in front of about 100 strangers fades, you have FUN. Good, clean, fun. Don’t forget to pack some thick socks, and if you never wanted to be a Mighty Duck like me and this is your first time on ice, bring some gloves.

But if you can't wait till the 15th for your fix of icey goodness, Winterland is officially open at Carriage Works in Redfern, and they are offering $12.50 skating session in their indoor rink. Complete with market stalls and a cafe, Winterland is a great idea, because it’s cold outside already, right? Winterland runs from the 5th to the 31st of July.

So there you go. So many options for passing the cold, unforgiving Winter days. Plus ice skating to 80’s tune is totally romantic, so if you are in the mood to woo someone, this is the ultimate date. You get to hold hands, the views are fantastic (between the actual scenery and people munching ice and flailing about in fear) and you get your endorphins pumping so smiles are a guarantee.

I love Winter.
