The Beautiful Girls album review

10 June, 2010

It’s been three long years since we last heard from Sydney based band The Beautiful Girls but they’re back with their newly released album, Spooks.

The threesome’s sound has matured significantly during their hiatus, taking them from their garage band days to this seriously slick record.

Previously describing their music as rock-roots based, the new album sees the threesome embracing reggae and jazz with spectacular results.  Hailing from the quiet beachside suburb of Avalon in Sydney’s North (also home to brother and sister duo Angus and Julia Stone), the progression to reggae would seem quite natural, but according to singer-songwriter Mat McHugh, they’re not actually huge reggae fans, “but the reggae I do like, I love, love, love.”

We can’t get enough of the album. Perfect for Sunday afternoons and crisp winter mornings, Spook’s cool tunes are chilled enough for any occasion.

Our favourites from the album? Rockers (Downtown Upstyling) features some great dub and we love the trumpet solo on the title track Spooks. Track number five, My Latest Mistake, is lyrically beautiful and My Mind Is an Echo Chamber, the album’s closing song, is perfect.

Check out the first single from the album, 10:10, below.

You can purchase Spooks on iTunes here

Trust us, it’s worth the $16.99!
