The modelling world can feel like such a cookie cutter production line sometimes. The same wide eyes, perfect pouts, long, light brown hair, killer cheekbones and petite noses. And then along comes a breath of fresh air with a unique look that grabs you. Like Julia Nobis.
Julia was our star of this year’s RAFW. She stole the show at Dion Lee, Ellery, Zimmermann, Kate Sylvester and Manning Cartell, and Sara Phillips even custom designed a cowgirl shirt with ‘Julia’ emblazoned on the back in rhinestones.
Just a year ago Julia was sitting in a classroom in Sydney’s Rose Bay. She's now had an exclusive for Calvin Klein, opening spots at Richard Nicoll and TopShop Unqiue and runway appearances for Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, Prada, Valentino, Christopher Kane and Rick Owens.
To be honest, it’s very surprising she wasn’t booked for more than 13 shows at this year’s RAFW. Is it a reflection on the industry in Australia that Julia, who has walked for the biggest labels in the world, was booked for less than half as many shows as Meg Lindsay, a complete unknown outside of Australia who happens to fit that perfect model mould?
We hope we get another chance to see more of Julia at RAFW before (like so many of Australia’s big modelling megastars) she reaches a certain level of success and stops returning to our runways.

Updated June 4: Julia has now just appeared in Alexander Wang's Resort 2011 look book (which last year starred Abbey Lee Kershaw) - well done Julia!
