Sixteen is a photographic exhibition curated by Oliver Bryce Yates, a skateboarder/model/photography enthusiast who last year made his move to the big city to pursue his dreams.
Clearly things are going well.
Currently finalising preparations for his first Sydney show, OBY has brought together sixteen of Australia's best photographers to do their thing.
Why sixteen? Well, it's his lucky number. Maybe it reflects on some kind of rain-man number fixation level, but who knows. We asked Bryce to break it down for us:
"There is hope for the show to form some sort of catalyst that will lead towards a stronger scene in photography within Sydney and Australia at large.
Going into this show, I felt a lack of a strong, self supporting culture within photography.
The coordination with 15 other people is at times a complete nightmare. I called everyone from out of state to make sure they were not alienated in the process. I also personally met with all the photographers from within Sydney. At the end of the day, I want it to be a close knit exhibition as opposed to a static collection of photos."
The friends for life approach has already spawned talks between contributors, with a few already planning future collaborations. Impressive since the exhibition hasn't even opened yet.
Artists involved are:
Jackson Eaton
Pedro Ramos
Luke Byrne
Ward Roberts
Oliver Bryce Yates
Sam Ash
Sam Stephenson
Brett Chan
Leon Batchelor
Gene Eaton
Tony Mckey
Ross Jenkinson
Sam Chiplin
Joe Coleman
Ryan Kenny
Jacinda Fermanis
The chosen sixteen will be throwing down individual collections, featuring various subjects all shot on film.
It will be an amazing visual feast, all the works are for sale, and on the opening night there will be beers, cupcakes and lots of hipsters. Sexy times.
Sixteen opens on the 9th of June 6pm-9pm and runs from June 10th – 27th.
