NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK

28 January, 2010

"Has someone had some work done...?"

Happy New Year! Well, ok, not really, but sometimes it takes a little while to adjust to a new decade...

So January 1st 2010 is long gone, but let's imagine that January 28th is an even better date to make a resolution, turn over a new leaf, begin something new.

If you visit here regularly, you'll notice that it looks different. Same same, in that we will still be posting our regular bits and bobs such as "My Top Picks", but different, with new contributors, more news from all over, and some fancy-pants features such as "Lookbooks" and "Events".

So please; sit down, relax, kick back, and enjoy the scenery. We hope you like our new look, and stay tuned because there's plenty more where this came from!

The Knife / Opera / Free download

19 January, 2010

Remember this video?

Well, if you were thinking that you haven't heard from The Knife in a while it's because they've been busy working on an opera. Yep, an opera.

The Knife (along with fellow Euro-Muso collaborators, Mt. Sims and Planningtorock) was commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for the opera titled, 'Tomorrow In A Year'. Based on Charles Darwin's book, 'On The Origin Of The Species', it explores Darwinian theory and the story of evolution. Fairly original for an opera huh...??

Unfortunately it doesn't look like we'll be seeing the production at the Sydney Opera House any time soon. However, you can grab a free download of the first track to be released from the studio album - just go to www.theknife.net. It's really good, and even better because it's about 12 minutes long. The entire album is due to be released on March 1st.

I think it's so cool to see contemporary musicians working on conceptual projects such as this. I hope you like.

This Week's Picks - Paul Bui

18 January, 2010

This week we hear from one of Australia's most exciting young stylists, ex-Oyster Magazine Editor turned freelance stylist, Paul Bui.

Bui shares with us his five favourite pieces for both the lads and the ladies, and treats us to a few style tips along the way.

After a four and a half year stint at Oyster, Bui has recently made the shift to styling, with shoots for Black, Yen and No magazine currently hitting the stands. You can expect to see alot more of his work following his very recent signing with Vivien's Creative Agency, but if you can't wait, check out his back catalogue at PaulBui.tv

Ellery et Graz Sunglasses $300
Graz always makes great quality sunglasses and Kym’s designs strive for an international feel, so it seems fitting that the two should collaborate on an eyewear collection. The result is strong-shaped shades that look equally at home whether you’re trawling Bondi markets or the streets of Le Marais. Very chic and a definite favourite of mine.

Konstantina Mittas Krake Corset Dress $785
I’m not usually a fan of strapless mini-dresses but Konstantina seems to have found a solution to making something, which can often verge on tacky, look sophisticated and edgy. In an eye-popping electric blue, this dress is cut in all the right places and is sure to turn heads... in all the right ways, of course.

Limedrop Very Very Big Shirt Mens was $198 now $158.40
It is criminal that there are still guys out there wearing shirts with such low cut necklines. We can see your man-breasts. Put them away please. High collars are the way to go. That’s why I am in love with this Very Very Big Shirt from Limedrop. If you’re still wearing jodhpurs or low crotched harem pants, this piece is a good length. If you’re not, it looks great with jeans. Just be sure to button up!

LIFEwithBIRD Partying Ways on sale was $595 now $476
A little black dress is a staple for any wardrobe. This perennial classic comes in all shapes and forms but LIFEwithBIRD have conjured up a great version with interesting gathered detailing, a tulip bottom and sexy v-back. Trés cute and could easily take the discerning wearer from day to night.

Seventh Wonderland Romance One Piece Swimsuit $220
Summer has swung into full gear and while searching for the perfect swimsuit can be such a pain, there’s actually quite a lot of great options this season. One of my favourites is this Seventh Wonderland one piece, with textured fabric panels and lace cup details. It has a great 50’s feel and you can easily wear it with skirts, jeans or shorts.

Leather Love

14 January, 2010

The Spring 2010 collections were all about soft, buttery leathers in beige, khaki, black and grey in creations outside of the usual leather realm. Moving beyond the standard leather use in bags, jackets and shoes, this season we were treated to super soft leather dresses, skirts, shorts and tops.

Vogue China celebrated the best examples from the collections with an editorial starring Hanne Gaby Odiele alongside designs by Hermés, Celine, Alexander Wang, Givenchy, Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent in their latest issue.

The key to the look is selecting the softest, most buttery leathers and combining them and combining them with great neutral classics in your wardrobe, like the Strummer leather shorts with a great beige trenchcoat and heavy tights or the Ellery leather tee with classic cuffed chinos and a great belt. And remember - you don't have to limit leather to your winter wardrobe!

This Week's Picks - Estelle Dévé from One Perfect Morning

11 January, 2010

Estelle Dévé is fast becoming Melbourne's favourite fashion immigrant.

The French born blogger and jewellery designer is doing a hell of a good job promoting her adopted hometown as a style capital on an international scale, with her popular blog, One Perfect Morning, mixing the best of local Melbourne labels with her favourite international superstars - Rodarte, Dries Van Noten, Acne, Celine and Alexander Wang.

Among these Melbourne labels is, of course, Dévé's own jewellery line, Estelle Dévé Jewellery, which now in its second season is winning fans with its African tribe/space odyssey inspired leather and gold tubular neckpieces and chunky cocktail rings.

We spoke with the fashion ingenue to relaunch our weekly feature 'This Week's Picks' for 2010, as she talked us through her five favourite things available at The Grand Social. Enjoy!

1/ Chronicles of Never: The Origin of Light Sunglasses
$300

*The sunglasses are a cross between Willy Wonka's and Dries Van Noten's last collection. They're a bit "out there" I guess but when I buy sunglasses I tend to go for statement shapes in a plain colour so those ones would be perfect. I'm also in love with the greyish/black colour.

2/ Nylon Flocks by Nicola Finetti: High Neck Dress with Triangle Insert
on sale was $381 now $304.80

*This is an easy LBD with nice folds detail. It's pretty figure-hugging but could easily be toned down with black ankle cowboy boots and a black blazer. I love short black dresses because they're just easy to throw on and accessorize and you can either look dressed-up or down with the same item according to what you wear with it.

3/ Nathan Smith: Mens style Tee
$69.95

*Never underestimate the power of a great white tee. Nathan's one are perfect, the fit is amazing and the cotton really soft. I could easily just live in them and if I had the budget, would not hesitate an instant in throwing out old my old tees and replace them with a selection of Nathan's in white, heather grey and black.

4/ Nylon Flocks by Nicola Finetti: Bodysuit with Exposed Zip
on sale was $357 now $285.60

*I have a weird facination for bodysuits, even though they might be about the most unpractical item of clothing known to woman. I have shoulder padded ones, plain cotton ones, mesh ones, and so on.. It is not an everyday item but they always look amazing just pair with high-waisted pants, shorts or skirts. I'm also an avid collector of biker jackets. This bodysuit seems to be the perfect unlikely marriage between the two, so it's ticking all the boxes!

5/ Konstantina Mittas: Crochet Neckpiece by 2 by Lyn and Tony
$660

*Since I have started my own label, I tend not to buy any jewellery anymore but I've discovered Lyn and Tony Jewellery last time I went to Sydney and I have to admit their crochet neckpieces are absolutely amazing. I would be a great contrast with a simple black outfit, maybe just over a plain black tee and bike shorts.
