You can always rely on Marc Jacobs to take an idea and push it to its extreme. Last season this meant demure librarian, the season before it was the theatre, and before that it was ‘80s pop and Little House on the Prairie meets Eliza Doolittle. So when he released his latest collection in New York, this time taking his inspiration from ‘New York dolls’ in the glamour days of the ‘70s, you would expect nothing less than a riot of colour, satin, oversized flowers, hot pants, flared pantsuits and sheer, flowing dresses. And that’s just what he delivered.
A lot of the more flesh-baring outfits were very reminiscent of Jodie Foster's iconic role in Taxi Driver, playing a 12 year-old prostitute in New York in the 1970s, this was especially evident in the upturned wide brim straw hats, Missoni-style knits, hot pants, big fake flowers and oversized, rose-coloured sunglasses.
We're imagining Marc's BFF Rachel Zoe must be going bananas for the new collection, considering her personal penchant for all things '70s, flared and flowing. We'll just have to wait for the NYFW episode of The Rachel Zoe Project to find out.
Our favourite parts: the big straw hats, the bold colour combinations and the '70s sundresses.
