NYFW: Alexander Wang lightens up

13 September, 2010

As soon as a designer starts to think they’re getting neatly boxed into a certain aesthetic and particular signatures, they love to turn around and do the opposite. So after making his mark with collections that were super sexy, dark and moody, Alexander Wang has presented a show in New York that focused on ivory and white balanced with touches of rose gold and copper, as well as bold splashes of terracotta and pastel green (and no black in sight!).

And colour wasn't his only departure, this season's silouhette was loose and layered, and, with the exception of one pair of shorts, all of the hemlines were on the knee or longer.  The collection had the freshness of Calvin Klein, but maintained its downtown cool with the help of some punk-inspired accessories and motorcycle vests.

Our favourite parts: the sheer summer knits, Abbey Lee (newly peroxided) and Julia and the growing movement away from body-con towards loose fits and below-the-knee hemlines, designed to be worn layered and fluid.
