Skinny male models are becoming a thing of the past. Over the past few seasons there has been a movement away from the stick insect boys to decidedly beefy men. It’s as though we’ve watched these boys develop from adolescence into their manhood, minus the acne and braces.
From around 2004 Hedi Slimane was seen as the force behind the emancipated boys who graced the catwalk in his Dior shows. Karl Lagerfeld even admits to losing all his weight so he could fit into a Slimane suit! But since the ‘ano-boy’ hey day, designers have gradually cast more muscular men to wear their clothes. Perhaps they're realising that the majority of men don’t want to look like they're on their deathbed, preferring to hit the gym than squeeze into a pair of size 0 leggings.
These labels will probably even sell more clothes now, considering how many more guys can now relate to what’s strutting down the runway. Good work designers, recession solved!
