Don't judge a magazine by its cover?

3 June, 2010

As soon as we laid eyes on the cover of the latest edition of Numero magazine we fell in love. The soft lighting, the coral lip against Jac’s flowing brown locks and the swooping metallic silver sheath. Divine. This cover has us sold. We must get our hands on this issue as soon as it hits our shores so we can enjoy the full editorial. But what’s this? There’s no accompanying editorial? It’s just a lone cover shot? Disappointingly, yes.

And this isn’t a standalone occurrence. Similar disappointments have occurred twice in the past six months with Vogue Australia. Most recently there was the standalone cover shot of Catherine McNeil in the January issue, and then there was last year’s October edition, featuring a beautiful cover of Anna Selezneva from Vogue China’s July issue, but not featuring Anna’s beautiful editorial (no doubt for budgetary reasons).

Do you know of more examples? Do you think it’s ok for a magazine to use a cover that has no accompanying editorial in the magazine? Is this financially canny marketing that tricks the reader into buying something it’s not going get – ie. false advertising?
