So! Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. It's knocking at the door, and this year's front row has more international bloggers and unnecessary scandal than you can poke a stick at!
Garance Dore and Scott Schuman return to RAFW this year. Garance has recently caused a stir with her comments on plus sized models. Garance told media outlet Sky News, she considers it a fad and believes it promotes unhealthy body image. NY Mag has had a cry about the story too. Whether you agree or not, Garance's point was far more candidly put than that heavenly hypocrite Karl Lagerfeld, who turned around and shot some larger ladies for V Magazine, after damning them as couch potatos. But poor Garance! The woman was tactful and her opinion seemed not to stem from a dislike or disgust towards bigger girls, just an understanding of what happens in the industry. Oh, to be a blogger with an opinion these days!
Tim Blanks is heading down under and surely he will be thrilled to compare notes with Harper's Bazaar's newest recruit, Lara Bingle. Tim Blanks' origins lie with our favourite neighbours, New Zealand. With this year's schedule, there is no doubt Blanks will be impressed and many hoping his coveted coverage will woo the international crowds, and bring even more attention to RAFW and Australian fashion in general.
It's great to get an International voice through Blanks, but where is Linlee Allen? She recently commented on Frockwriter, "So sad I won't be there to witness the 15th year - even sadder that my offer of coverage in everything from Italian vogue to the Daily Beast, Purple Diary, NY Times and V was declined. Disappointing for me but even more disappointing for designers interested in coverage within these titles :( That's why I live in America: the land of opportunity. "
Such a bummer! You can check out Linlee's blog here, which is always full of rad pictures and up close and personal shots of amazing famous faces. Kind of like a celebrity zoo. (http://linleeloves.blogspot.com/)
Tommy Ton (Jak & Jil) and Susie Bubble are also headed down under - Tommy to take amazing photos that will be spread from Tumblr to Tumblr across the universe and Susie to report the whole affair and impress us with her mish mash of amazing threads. Susie's "blogger vs journo" creds shouldn't be sniffed at - she has a working relationship with Dazed and Confused in the UK. She will be here if Iceland and its ash party can calm down and let some flights leave! Iceland- no strippers, no McDonalds - just rude volcanos.
Wednesday night the official schedule went live and the Fashion Week Frockstars exhibit opened with a flurry of Aussie fashion royalty rocking out at The Powerhouse. Twitter was flooded with Blackberry and iPhone pics of the event - and a lot of rumours were given more fuel or put to bed. Frockstars is running till August, and is worth a visit, for all you fashion freaks out there.
Ksubi is officially closing the week, an event many people are excited about. Their shows draw as much notoriety as the boys themselves. Recently thought by many to have gone bankrupt, they are now back, and it looks like, with a bang. It's pretty exciting stuff, with their David Jones contracts, footwear and optical lines all happening at the moment. Could this be the fashion phoenix-from-the-ashes only myths are made of?
The SMH Sydney Six article has caused a stir around the way, with many taking offence at the comparison to the infamous Antwerp Six. Therese Rawsthorne, Dion Lee, Konstantina Mittas, Romance Was Born's Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales, Christopher Esber and Ben Pollitt of Friedrich Gray are all innovative and young designers, all with amazing fashion cool cred and the designs to back it up. Crazy how such an innocent and supportive article about designer talent in Sydney can cause so many locals offence! All six designers are showing during the week, and alot of people, bloggers and "real" media alike, are excited to see the shows. The haterade can be sipped in the comments over at Pedestrian, who had a really interesting point on their article- what actually unites these designers, aside from being totes cool?
