The Grand Social for The Vine - New York Fashion Week Part 2

18 September, 2009

Welcome to the second instalment of the rollercoaster ride that is New York Fashion Week. The highs (Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen, Boy by Band of Outsiders), the lows (hangovers, severe sleep deprivation) and everything in between (hot dogs, Central Park and spending a third of one’s day in taxis), proudly brought to you by The Grand Social.

Let’s start with Marc Jacobs, because, this will come as no surprise, it was freaking amazing. While last season was undoubtedly all about the ‘80s, for Jacobs’ latest collection he took us on a trip to the theatre. The genius of Jacobs is his ability to mix an array of crazy, disparate inspirations and make them all work together, here we had Japanese Kabuki makeup, pointy Aladdin sandals, safari jackets, underwear as outerwear and lets not forget the ruffles- oh so many amazing ruffles.

Jacobs can certainly boast the most the star-studded front-row so far this week: Madonna arrived with her toyboy lover Jesus and Lady Gaga donned a studded leather mask (presumably not what Jacobs was referring to when he said post-show that he was sick of seeing girls wearing black leather and studs, ‘it’s not such an individual expression’), alongside Anna Winotur and daughter Bee Scahffer, Rachel Zoe and bloggers Perez Hilton, ‘Style Rookie’ Tavi and Bryanboy.

Zac Posen really amped things up a notch this season with a collection banging with colour, stripes, crisscross weaves, geometric cut-outs and a daring candy-coloured transparent raincoat. The evening gowns were slinky and sexy we loved Abbey Lee Kershaw in a figure hugging, full length nude gown adorned all over with gold metallic flowers – so hot!

LA label and favourite of all the cool celebs (past and present campaign stars Jason Schwarzman and Kirsten Dunst both attended) Boy by Band of Outsiders chose a ‘presentation’ instead of a runway show to showcase their latest collection, providing a kind of live look book shoot for the uber hip crowd (condensed to an enjoyable 20 minutes) shot to the backdrop Malibu in the ‘70s. For the boys it was all about the casual suit, teamed with boat shoes and rolled trousers, and dressed up or down with a bow tie, polo or checked shirt. For the girls the blazer remains supreme, be it in cream with black buttons, double breasted or with cropped sleeves, teamed with a sexy loose shirt, cuffed shorts or a wrap skirt.
